Why Pro-Lite Paddles? Pro-Lite has a long history of being involved with pickleball. It is a small family owned business that helps grow pickleball at the grassroots level. The company was started in 1984 and has remained true to its roots and remained a small business. While other family owned businesses have sold out to mega corporations, Pro-Lite continues to be family owned and manufacture paddles in Port Washington, Wisconsin.
Edge Guard vs. No Edge Guard - One of the first questions I receive from my students is, "What does a pickleball edge guard do?" An edge guard helps protect the core of the paddle. When a player makes contact with the ground, this can damage the paddle because most paddles have a honeycomb core (the exception being a wooden paddle that is solid). The edge guard helps prevent the edge from being crushed when it touches the ground. The edge guard also adds additional weight to the head, known as perimeter weight. Without the perimeter weight the paddle would be tail-heavy. To understand this concept, think about swinging a baseball bat, and that the barrel of the bat is away from your body to give you more speed as you make contact with the ball. The same concept applies with a pickleball paddle. For the sake of protecting your paddle, and the sake of your swing, an edge guard is recommended on any paddle that has a honeycomb core.
